On a sunny Saturday morning, we grabbed coffee in Detroit, breakfast in Kalamazoo, and met Maddie and Nick in Appleton, Wisconsin. No stranger to the Appleton Beer Factory, it was lovely to see a number of friends there, get reacquainted with the light in the space, and have some french fries with a cocktail. Always a fan of the first look, it’s as fun to watch it unfold in the aisle as it is in a location we’ve picked for our couple. Art Deco vibes, rooftops, and the first ever ceremony inside the ABF. And as far as indoor locations go, it’s hard to beat barns and breweries. They have a lot in common: natural light, a variety of textures, and a lot of space to move around and find shooting angles in. Speaking of shooting – we occasionally get asked what we’re shooting on. All the photos here were shot on Nikon’s flagship Z9 with a pair of monster f/1.2 lenses; a 50mm and an 85mm. A Nikon Z6II with a 20mm f/1.8 covered the wide shots. Our style is to know when to direct and when to let scenes unfold naturally, and we have the same values for editing; we wash the set with a look and feel that fits the mood, space, and client. And that’s it. We let the photos tell the story, and we put the work into taking the photos – not editing them. Ok. Enough geeking out. Enjoy the story these photos tell of Maddie & Nick.
